[From Stephen Trew] The press somehow seems to be missing the real story. “The implication is that there is an ongoing base of sales that goes to Android, and to some extent iPhone as well, that totally ignores product launches, and just buys a phone. Then, there’s a base of people who wait to buy the new iPhone (and of course come off their 24m contact in another launch quarter, eager to buy). And this latter base is getting bigger every year, and indeed driving all of the growth.”

[From Stephen Trew] A question that has probably been asked a thousand times before. “Smartphone sales are dominated by Samsung and Apple. Other manufacturers are simply eeking out an existence in a decreasing niches that are being swept aside as the two tech giants storm in to their territory. “
[From Stephen Trew] One of the best iOS apps gets a redesign. Let’s hope the servers are more secure too. “Evernote may not have shared the best of news a few days ago, but that’s not stopping the notetaking service from giving its Mac application a boost in the features department. Evernote’s quick to point out that while this release might not be the biggest it’s ever pushed out, it truly believes today’s revamped Menu Bar Helper to be “one of these little things that we think you’ll really enjoy.”“
[From Stephen Trew] Yes. And we’ll all end up like Topolski in this picture with a strange eye habit of looking up to the right all the time. “Let’s face it: we’re all pretty horrible at turning off push notifications on our smartphones. You install an app, give it permission to notify you with updates, and before you know it, your phone’s buzzing like a beehive with status updates, tagged photos, and friends checking in nearby. The definition of “urgent” is becoming harder and harder to define. “

[From Stephen Trew] The great Spotify continues to grow. “Spotify is doing pretty well and they offer a great service - listening to entire albums for free. Subscribing removes the ads and limits to how much you can listen to, and it is worth it.”
[From Stephen Trew] Looks like a very useful gadget. “Want to Google your keys? Now you can. It looks like someone finally solved the “Google your keys” problem in a way that real humans will use. It’s called Linquet, and it’s a little coin-sized trinket you attach to anything to stop you from losing it. This might sound familiar, but it looks like Linquet finally got it right”
[From Stephen Trew] If you have ever dreamed of starting your own competitor to a network TV station now is your chance. It’s not every day a new internet protocol is launched.
[From Hans] There are some interesting apps that are coming to Google Glass. “As it turns out, Page and Co. have been working with the New York Times to build an application. Just ask for some news and Glass will deliver a headline, a byline, an accompanying image and the number of hours since the article in question was posted. What’s more is that users can tap and have the eyewear read the story’s text aloud. The duo are also testing a breaking news feature where notifications regarding fresh stories will appear as they’re published. Gmail also got some time in the limelight with its very own app. An email sender’s image and subject line will appear on the device’s screen, and users can reply by dictating their messages.”
The Gadgeteer reviews the cell helmet case for iPhone 5. “cellhelmet started out life as a Kickstarter project last year, and they are now shipping cases for the iPhone 5 or 4/4S and the 4th- or 5th-gen iPod touch. I received an iPhone 5 case for review. At first glance, the cellhelmet seems like most other iPhone cases on the market – it protects the back of the phone from scratches. cellhelmet has a big difference; it comes with a 1-year damage coverage that protects you from the expense of replacing a damaged device. “
[From Hans] This is great news and I especially like my iPad Mini. “The January panel shipment data may be an indicator for 2013, starting with Apple’s product mix shift. As we noted in December, Apple had planned to sell 40M iPad minis (7.9”) and 60M iPads (9.7”) in 2013. However, the reality seems to be the reverse, as the iPad mini has been more popular than the iPad. We now understand that Apple may be planning to sell 55M iPad minis (7.9”) and 33M iPads (9.7”) in 2013.”
